This report examines why Britain’s Muslim communities were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing on official data and academic research to identify the underlying structural factors that contributed to higher rates of infection, hospitalisation and mortality. It explores the intersection of health inequalities, employment patterns and housing conditions, highlighting how existing socio-economic disparities amplified the impact of the pandemic on British Muslims.
The report concludes with a series of evidence-based policy recommendations, including improved data collection by religion, culturally sensitive healthcare, enhanced occupational protections for frontline workers, and action to address housing inequality.
